Climate change can be a big problem, but there are small things that we can do which can make all the difference. If we try, each one of us can do his or her part to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases which are heating up our planet. A lot of the gases are released as a result of actions we do every day, so all we really need to do is learn how to do some things in a more efficient way.
Here’s how you can help:
- don’t leave your iPod or mobile phone recharger plugged in after you have finished using it.
- plant a tree – trees absorb CO2 and help keep our planet from becoming too warm.
- don’t open windows when the air conditioning is turned on.
- completely turn off your computer, PlayStation, television, electronics and DVD players when they are not in use. If the light is still on you are still using energy.
- don’t open the refrigerator door too many times and when you do open the door, be quick so as not to let the cold out.
- during the day, use sunlight as much as possible.
- use energy-efficient light bulbs and other products.
- walk or use your bicycle whenever possible.
- switch off the television and the lights in empty rooms.
- don’t put warm food or drinks into the refrigerator; it raises the temperature and forces the refrigerator to use more energy.
- avoid products that have a lot of packaging. This packaging produces too much trash!
- when choosing fruits and vegetables, buy products grown nationally or locally. The smaller the distance these products have to travel, the more energy savings they represent. Make biological products a priority.
- recycle. Cans, bottles, plastic bags, newspapers – put them all in the Ecoponto recycling bins.
- talk to your parents, friends and teachers about energy efficiency; have them discover what you already know about.
